I have thought about this book over the years and occasionally looked in used bookstores but never come across it. On the last page it asks if you can count the stars and there are hundreds of stars. However, the author was a man, James Redding Ware; it took another twenty years or so before female writers of mystery fiction started to make waves, with Anna Katharine Green one of the most prominent early figures in the field. The sense of superimposing our modern life over the historical one reminded me of the Georgetown of my childhood layered over the colonial one. (As I recall, when Christopher turns the rope into an eagle, not quite escaping Clagett Chew's metal-tipped whip and getting a lasting scar on his cheek for as a lasting souvenir, and flies into the emperor's garden to steal the jade tree, it's to provide means to Mr.

I think it came out in 1971-1973 just not sure when. Perfect for: Kids who like to read about real people. We've organized the list into three categories: History, Science and Biography.
